So you’ve bought your dream car, and now you want to keep in top condition for as long as possible. Here are some things to remember to do after you pull out of the car lot that should keep your running costs down to a minimum:

1. Be patient during the break-in period.

The point is not to over-do anything during this critical period in your cars early history. The easier you take it on your car at the start, the longer it will serve you with minimum hassles in the long run, so keep that in mind.

While your running in your car try to keep your speed under 55 mph for the first 1000 miles so the engine runs in smoothly.

No hard acceleration, keep your engine revs low, preferably below 3000 rpm for maximum effect.

Do not pull any heavy loads with your car, no pulling trailers or camper vans and avoid putting heavy materials in your trunk or roof rack .

2. Drive with care everyday.

Just because you’ve broken in your car doesn’t mean you should stop being considerate to it. if you take care of your car daily or at least regularly you will be rewarded with minimum servicing.

Don’t accelerate hard or try to race your engine just after start up. This will greatly produce more wear and tear on your engine and shorten it’s running life drastically.

Try not to speed and accelerate quickly, particularly when it’s cold outside. This kind of behaviour will shorten the life of your engine considerably.

Driving carefully will extend the life of your cars tires. Do your best to stick to posted speed limits. Avoid jerky moves, fast stopping/starting, keep clear of potholes, and try not hitting the curb. Avoiding these incidents will add more years of driving pleasure to your vehicle.

3. Buy gas at a honorable service station.

Some gas stations don’t filter their fuel, but if yours does, ask how regularly they change their filters. If they give you the runaround, change fuel stations until you find one that meets your requirements. Try not to subject your vehicle to dirty gasoline, or worse, if it’s mixed with water, it will greatly reduce your engines running life.

Change oil regularly.
